SPELLBREAKER
The long-awaited finale to the Spellwright series.
“To test a spell that predicts the future, try to murder the man selling it; if you can, it can’t. That, at least, was Leandra’s rationale for poisoning the smuggler’s blackrice liqueur.” Leandra Weal has a bad habit of getting herself in dangerous situations. Things only get more precarious when she buys a spell that provides a glimpse one day into her future. She discovers that she will either murder someone she loves or die herself. Problem is, she doesn’t know whom she might murder. That’s a pretty big problem for a woman who has a shark god for a lover, a hostile empress for an aunt, and a rogue wizard turned champion of chaotic magical language for a father. Most worrisome, Leandra has a mother, who—especially when arguing with her daughter—can be a real dragon.
Leandra’s quest to solve the mystery of the murder-she-might-commit becomes more urgent when her chronic disease flairs up and her home, the tropical archipelago of Ixos, is plagued by strange natural disasters and fierce political intrigue. Everywhere she turns, Leandra finds herself amid intrigue and conflict. It seems her bad habit for getting into dangerous situations is turning into a full blown addiction.
In this final installment of the Spellwright Trilogy, author Blake Charlton, a dyslexic and a physician, continues to explore the themes of disability, illness, injury, and healing through his love for epic fantasy. Spellbreaker stands alone as a complete story; however, fans of the series will find in it answers to the questions raised by the previous books about Leandra’s legendary parents, Nicodemus Weal and Francesca DeVega.
At its heart, Spellbreaker is the story of an extraordinary and troubled family who must race against time to uncover the shocking truth about a prophesied demonic invasion, human language, and their own identities--that is, if they don’t kill each other first.
Blake Charlton is severely dyslexic and was unable to read fluently until age twelve. He learned to read through fantasy novels. Graduating from Yale University summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa honors, he is currently a senior resident physician in Internal Medicine at the University of California San Francisco.
