SOMEONE YOU LOVE HAS GONE

Gurjinder Basran

A mesmerizing tale of love and heartbreak that crosses continents and spans generations.
With the death of her mother, the lynchpin of the family, Simran is haunted by memories and questions for which she has no answers. Also facing the disintegration of her marriage and her estrangement from her own daughter, she sees the life she has carefully constructed unraveling. All this forces her to confront one of her most painful memories: her parents turning their back on her younger brother when they were children and sending him away to live with strangers. Was it his strange obsession with collecting poetry on scraps of paper? Or the fact that he talked about having memories that couldn't possibly be his – but seemed to be those of his long-dead uncle? Even his mother, so protective of her only son, agreed with her husband to send him away. Now, her mother gone, Simran must face up to those disturbing memories and seek answers both here in North America and in India. Perhaps finally she can put her ghosts to rest.

GURJINDER BASRAN's debut novel, Everything Was Good-bye, was the winner of Mother Tongue Publishing's Search for the Great BC Novel Contest in 2010 and was awarded the 2011 Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize for the most outstanding work of fiction by a BC author. As a manuscript, Everything Was Good-bye was shortlisted for Amazon.com's 2008 Breakthrough Novel Award and earned her a place in the Vancouver Sun's annual speculative arts and culture article “Ones to Watch.” Gurjinder studied creative writing at Simon Fraser University and the Banff Centre for the Arts and currently lives in Delta, British Columbia with her husband and two sons.
