SOCIOFOBIA

Sociophobia: Political Change in the Era of Digital Utopia

Voted Best Essay of 2013 by readers of El País

Since the collapse of the neoliberal utopia, the primary ideological consensus of our time is the capacity of communication technology to instigate positive social dynamics. The economy of knowledge is unanimously considered to be the solution to the speculative deterioration of the markets; social networks are the solution to the fragility of our nomadic and globalized lives; Cyberpolitics aspires to regenerate our exhausted democracies... We like to imagine the Internet as a kind of technological orthopedics that has transformed to the point of virtually overcoming the practical dilemmas inherited from the modern world.

Sociophobia questions this cyber-fetishist dogma. The ideology of the Internet has generated a decreased social reality, not an increased one. In short it has lowered our expectations in terms of what is expected of political intervention as well as personal relationships. It affirms that technology does not automatically bring about liberating social transformation. And it postulates that in a context of fragile social relationships, the bonds that these networks create seem to be insufficient in doing what we expect of a society: that it be a system of mutual help for its members.
