SNOWDEN

Ted Rall

"I think (Snowdon) is arguably the great hero of our times." said publisher of Seven Stories Press

As many as 4 million citizens with security clearance saw some or all of the same documents revealed by Edward Snowden. Why did he, and not anyone else, decide to step forward and take the risks associated with becoming a whistleblower and fugitive from the NSA and the US government? Was it his personality, or his experience, or was it something intangible that set him apart?

Rall follows Snowden's life leading up to the time that he decided that working internally and talking to his supervisors and coworkers would not do any good, and that he had to go to the media. It follows up with his meeting in Hong Kong with the then editor of The Guardian Glenn Greenwald, and his attempts to go to South America via Havana, only to get stuck at Moscow's airport and eventually wind up in exile in the Russian Federation. It describes Snowden's political vision, and his hopes for the future. And, finally, it illustrates the reactions of the American government, the media and the political establishment, as well as those of the man in the street.

Most people have a tendency to turn their heads and look away when confronted with wrongdoing, especially when the perpetrator is a bullying, powerful state. But what if people stood as one to protect the rights of each and every one of us, when they saw those rights being violated? What if crowds of bystanders spoke up when they witnessed brutality on the streets of our cities? Snowden is the portrait of a brave young man and an incitation to all of us to gather up our courage and listen to our conscience.
