The term Smart City expresses the collection of the applications of digital technologies in modern life in cities and communities. We have come to expect solutions to the eco-nomical, social and political challenges through the growing power of digitization and networking. This upheaval has become evident in the middle of the first decade of the new century with advancement in micro-electronics, information and communication technology and new software paradigms. After the Internet has become firmly estab-lished advanced digital services and devices proliferate into all aspects of our lives.

The book is divided into two parts. The theoretical part describes the technical aspects of digitization, and the practical part focuses on lighting and transportation technology. It can be used as a textbook for students of energy technology, electronics, information technology and city planning. It serves also as a reference book for practitioners in the field and citizens interested in technical matters who want to better understand and use present and future opportunities of information technology.
