SHADOWS OF THE DARK CRYSTAL
Cory Godbey J.M. Lee Brian Froud
The first book in a series set in the world of Jim Henson's The Dark Crystal, one of the most beloved and enduring fantasy brands of the past thirty years, sure to draw in die hard fans and new fans alike.
The story takes place years before the events of the classic film and follows the journey of a young Gelfling woman who leaves her secluded home to uncover the truth surrounding the disappearance of her brother who has been accused of treason by the sinister Skeksis Lords.
The 1982 US/UK film has a large international following. More than 30 years after being released, the film continues to find new fans and to draw fans to sold out screenings around the world.
The film and its characters have a regular presence at San Diego Comic-Con. Penguin and The Jim Henson Company selected J. M. Lee's story "Shadow of the Dark Crystal" from nearly 500 submissions as part the highly publicized The Dark Crystal Author Quest contest, which was launched at San Diego Comic-Con in 2013. J. M. Lee is a novelist, writing mentor, illustrator, and graphic designer with a background in linguistics and film.
To help connect the new prequel story to the cult-classic film and its passionate fan base, Grosset & Dunlap enlisted original creature designer and popular fantasy artist Brian Froud to illustrate the covers. For more than 35 years, Brian Froud has been regarded as the preeminent faerie artist in the world and an authority on faeries and faerie lore. His internationally best-selling book Faeries with fantasy and Tolkien illustrator Alan Lee is considered a modern classic. His work with Jim Henson as conceptual designer on feature films The Dark Crystal, Labyrinth, and other Henson projects set new standards for design, puppeteering, and animatronics in film and are considered landmarks in the evolution of modern-day special effects.
J. M. (Joseph) Lee is a novelist, writing mentor, illustrator, and graphic designer with a background in linguistics and film. As a writer, he finds the most rewarding stories in fusion genre, from nostalgic historical fantasies to gritty sci-fi westerns. On the side, he enjoys dabbling in experimental short fiction and drinking a lot of coffee. He is represented by Erzsi Deak/Hen&ink Literary Studio.
