SEX, DRUGS, RATT & ROLL
My Life in Rock
This is a tell-all from Stephen Pearcy, the lead singer of '80s super group RATT that dishes about the groupies, the trashed hotel rooms, the drugs - and just how much you can get away with when you're one of the biggest hair metal stars of all time.
In the mid-1980s, Ratt was one of the biggest names on the Sunset Strip, architects of the glam metal scene alongside Motley Crue, Dokken and Quiet Riot, laying down the riffs and unleashing the scissor kicks that would herald the arrival of rock’s most flamboyantly debauched era. Ratt and their sleazy, melodic heavy metal became one of the most iconic acts of the hair movement, their 1984 debut single, the blockbuster anthem “Round and Round” becoming among the top-selling metal songs of all time. And with this tell-all memoir, Ratt frontman and chief rabble-rouser Stephen Pearcy finally shares his personal stories from the time when big-haired bands ruled the world. Thanks to their taste for heroin, handguns, and hamming it up, Ratt has a story packed with the drugs, depravity and mind-blowing fashion you’d expect from a top-selling band of the era. Ratt was notorious for their concert contract rider, which required backstage posters of naked chicks, cases of champagne and a dozen condoms…or no show. In this tell-all, readers will learn how Stephen was, from a young age, primed for a life of excess—his father died of a heroin overdose when he was 12, and by the age of 15, Stephen was himself a drug addict, a pill-popper and primary acid supplier to the city of San Diego. While laid up in the hospital after breaking both his femurs in a horrific car accident, a teenaged Stephen discovered his appetite for sex, as several young nurses climbed on top of him and had sex with him while his legs were in traction. In the thrill-seeking Robbin, Stephen found his perfect partner in crime, and Ratt’s drug use became legendary, even by hair metal standards. “Our tour bus is like our pirate ship, it’s where we rape and pillage,” said Stephen Pearcy in 1987. At the peak of his addiction, Robbin Crosby—who was roommates with Motley Crue’s Nikki Sixx—was spending $2,000 a day on heroin (that’s $750,000 a year). And that’s not even taking into account the cocaine—Robbin never left the house without at least a half ounce of blow in his pocket. In all, Robbin Crosby alone is thought to have spent $15million on drugs during his short life. Pearcy's memoir will contain all the tales of rock star excess—the trashed hotel rooms, the groupies, the drug abuse—that made those books memorable. In this tell-all, Stephen Pearcy finally lets music fans see behind the scenes into the lifestyle that was governed by the mantra “Pussy, Party, Paycheck” and gives them a glimpse of just what you can get away with when you’re a hair metal star.
As the founder, lead singer and songwriter of the popular rock band RATT, Stephen Pearcy led his band to critical praise and multi-platinum success. Formed in Los Angeles in 1982 from the remains of his band Mickey Ratt, Ratt was known for their flamboyant appearance and rebellious attitude. Pearcy currently lives in Los Angeles with his wife and daughter.
