BETTER IN EVERY SENSE
How the New Science of Sensation Can Help You Reclaim Your Life
In BETTER IN EVER SENSE, renowned neuroscientists Zindel Segal and Norman Farb explain how engaging your senses can help you break out of negative patterns and offer practical, science-backed advice on how to do so.
We need to come to our senses. Not because we're behaving irrationally, but because most of us are stuck in a rut. Many of us get by on super-efficient routines that once served us well but now stress us out. Others suffer from patterns of negative thinking that too often spiral into full-on depression. And for some, life has simply lost its spark and the well of creativity has run dry. When we're struggling with a specific problem, a bad habit, negative thoughts, or life in general, we may think we need to "tough it out" or "try harder." But when we do that, our brains actually double-down on the thinking patterns and behaviors that got us stuck in the first place - even when they clearly aren't working for us. Fortunately, the science of sensation provides the key.
In BETTER IN EVER SENSE, neuroscientists Zindel Segal and Norman Farb reveal how to effectively break free from our negative patterns by fully engaging our sensory network. Grounded in decades of scientific research, Segal and Farb explore the life?changing benefits of learning to toggle between our brain's two networks - our rapid problem-solving (habit) network and our network devoted to fresh insight (sensation). Readers will discover how they can boost their resilience, well-being, health, and creativity by activating the sensory network and engaging their senses wherever they are, in the moment, without needing to meditate or head off into the woods for a hike.
With straight-forward exercises and practical mental techniques for mastering "sense foraging," BETTER IN EVER SENSE expertly reveals how the surprising power of sensory experiences can liberate us from our ruts and dead-ends - and help us successfully handle all of life's challenges.
Zindel Segal is Distinguished Professor of Psychology in Mood Disorders at the University of Toronto. His work has been featured in numerous media outlets such as the New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, The Guardian, and Le Monde. He's studied psychological vulnerability to mood disorders for over 3 decades, receiving numerous awards for his work, and he co-developed Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), a psychological treatment that prevents relapse in clinical depression on par with antidepressant medication. His previous publications include The Mindful Way Through Depression (coauthored with Williams, Teasdale & Kabat-Zinn, 2007) which has been translated into 15 languages.
Norman Farb is an Associate Professor of Psychology at the University of Toronto, where he directs the Regulatory and Affective Dynamics laboratory and the Psychedelics Studies Research Program. His research is featured regularly in the popular press such as Scientific American, and O, the Oprah Magazine, and he's been interviewed on mental health and mindfulness on Canadian national television such as CP24 and Vision TV. Currently, Dr. Farb is working with Health Canada and the University of Toronto to lead the first clinical trial of psychedelic microdosing in Canada.
