Kim Mueller is an Australian expat in Berlin. She is jobless, rootless, and - as she's slowly discovering - somewhat useless. But, she is determined to write a bestseller. Her best friend, historian Belinay, just had a baby. Her therapist doesn't seem terribly interested in her problems. Everyone in her world seems to be moving on, growing up, finding their Purpose - everyone except Kim. Over the course of a year in Berlin, the two confront their twin acts of creation. Until a chance encounter with Matthew, a hotshot New York literary agent who is as emotionally unavailable as he is handsome (very). He gives Kim the direction she's been craving. She'll give herself one year to finish the novel - one year to find a Purpose, one year to decide whether or not to stay in Berlin, one year to fall into a self-destructive relationship with the increasingly flighty Matthew - before giving up for good. Set between Berlin and New York, Sad Girl Novel is a gorgeous, offbeat meditation on growing up, leaving home, and finding your calling. Phillippa Finkemeyer is a writer who lives in Melbourne, Australia. Her fiction has been listed for the Desperate Literature Short Fiction Prize (judged by Ottessa Moshfegh), the Richell Prize for Emerging Writers, the Disquiet Literary Prize, the Grace Marion Wilson Prize for Emerging Writers, and nominated for a Pushcart Prize. She lived in the neighborhood in Berlin where Sad Girl Novel takes place for 5 years, where she ran literary events and writing workshops - which she now continues in Melbourne. She has a Masters Degree in Book Publishing and Editing from RMIT, Melbourne. She's really into trains.
