RUBY FINLEY VS. THE INTERSTLLAR INVASION
A charming science-fueled adventure about an aspiring entomologist and the strange bug that turns her neighborhood upside down.
Eleven-year-old Ruby loves studying insects and would do just about anything to be an entomologist, much to the grossed-out dismay of her Gramma and the disapproval of her parents, who refuse to let her have a Twitter account - even though that's where the Midwestern Amateur Entomologist Society shares its really interesting information. Ruby knows everything there is to know about insects, arthropods, and bugs, so when she finds the weirdest bug she's ever seen in her front yard, she makes sure no one is looking and captures it for further study.
But when she turns around for just one second to see if anyone on her super-secret Twitter (sorry, Mom and Dad!) can identify it, the bug disappears.
By burning a hole through her window.
Right before men in black suits show up at her house, saying they're from the government and asking a lot of questions about the bug.
Soon after, Ruby's bug Tweet is mysteriously deleted and her tablet is somehow factory-reset. Spare parts and other random things start going missing around the neighborhood, and no one has seen or heard from the old lady down the street for almost a week. The adults don't seem too worried, but Ruby knows something strange is going on and, with the help of her friends, she's determined to investigate. Where did the bug really go, and could it be holding her neighbor hostage? Or is it something much, much bigger?
K. Tempest Bradford is a science fiction and fantasy writer, writing instructor, media critic, reviewer, and podcaster. Her debut middle grade novel, Ruby Finley vs. the Interstellar Invasion will be published in September 2022 by FSG Children's. Her short fiction has appeared in multiple anthologies and magazines including Strange Horizons, PodCastle, Sunspot Jungle, In the Shadow of the Towers, and many more. She's the host of ORIGINality, a podcast about the roots of creative genius, and contributes to several more. Her media criticism and reviews can be found on NPR, io9, and in books about Time Lords. When not writing, she teaches classes on writing inclusive fiction through LitReactor and Writing the Other.com.
