RESTORING EDEN
Unearthing The Agribusiness Secret That Poisoned My Farm Community
An inspiring nonfiction narrative by an Erin Brockovich-like activist who galvanizes her rural North Carolina community to save their land and way of life.
Silent Spring meets Notes from a Catastrophe in RESTORING EDEN: Unearthing The Agribusiness Secret That Poisoned My Farm Community by internationally recognized environmental scientist Elizabeth Hilborn. A veterinary bee expert and disease detective, a North Carolina farmer and Registered Nurse, Hilborn is herself a force of nature.
With absorbing writing and keen observations, Hilborn narrates her 2-year quest to solve an environmental mystery - uncovering the identity of the killer that poisoned her beautiful farm, causing insect and wildlife deaths and crop collapse. Part investigative journalism, part memoir, and part popular science, RESTORING EDEN is also the story of a tight-knit community of small family farms that becomes polarized but ultimately unites to defy the dictates of agrochemical companies, whose treatments destroy biodiversity one field at a time.
A lyrical celebration of nature by a passionate citizen scientist who felt personally called to advocate for the land, earth, and creatures who don't have a voice, RESTORING EDEN ultimately offers hope - that citizens can create change, that reform is possible, that we can play a role in stopping the environmental devastation of our age and restore a healthful relationship with the Earth. Hilborn provides a front row seat to the insect and avian apocalypse - and a way back from the brink.
Dr. Elizabeth D. Hilborn is a veterinary bee specialist and a senior environmental health scientist currently employed at the US Environmental Protection Agency. She trained as a disease detective with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. She's published more than 50 peer-reviewed scientific articles about the effects of pollution on human and animal health in public health, medical, and environmental health journals. She lives on her family farm with her husband, animals, and fruit trees in North Carolina.
