READY OR NOT
A surprise pregnancy comes with even more surprising revelations in this heartfelt, slow-burn, friends-to-lovers romantic comedy of found family and unexpected love.
Eve Hatch is happy with her life. Her apartment in Brooklyn is cozy and she lives close to her childhood best friend Willa, and far from her midwestern, religious upbringing where she always felt misunderstood. Her job is fine, but she's hoping her passion and hard work will help her land a more interesting role where she could actually make a difference someday. Her love life is not so great as she hasn't met the right guy and a couple of bad relationships lead her to an uncharacteristic one-night-stand, where that thing happens Eve gets pregnant, and then she makes the surprising decision to keep the baby.
This surprise pregnancy cracks open all the relationships in her life. Eve's ride-or-die friendship with Willa is now a mess (since Willa's been trying and failing to get pregnant). Willa's steadfast older brother, Shep, who has always been around throughout their childhood is suddenly always there, offering a helping hand and company. And the baby daddy is not even boyfriend material (not to mention he is distracted with his girlfriend).
Eve goes through all sorts of struggles over the months to figure out the next right steps in her expanding reality. It's scary, it's exciting, it's strange, but she begins to realize that love, in all forms, can sneak up on you and that family does not always happen like you imagine. Bastone's novel, like the film Knocked Up, focuses on surprise pregnancies and unconventional families but with a thoroughly modern female perspective, featuring considerate male characters and honest insight into sex, relationships, pregnancy, fertility, family, friendship, and love.
