PROJECT: TROUSERS

Cat Clarke

My name is Liv and it turns out I’m not so great at this whole ‘being a girl’ thing. If this were a cheesy American film, my story would probably be about a magical makeover and the sudden discovery of my so-called feminine side (with a soundtrack of suitably upbeat music). Well, sorry (not sorry) to disappoint. This isn’t a cheesy American film. This is real life. My life.
I’m on a mission, and like any decent mission, it even has its own (not very original) name... Project: Trousers. You see, I’m not allowed to wear trousers at my new school. And that’s a BIG problem. If you want to know why it’s such a big problem, I suppose I’d better let you in on a little secret. But only if you promise not to tell anyone. Deal?

OK, here goes. I’m not technically a girl. I’m transgender. Which is a bit like being a Transformer, only not quite as cool because I probably won’t get to save the world one day. A Transformer is a robot in disguise; I’m a boy in disguise.
Anyway, if Project: Trousers goes to plan, it could be the first step of an exciting journey. I guess I’ll have to think of a name for that, too. For now let’s just call it Mission: Me.

Cat was born in Zambia and brought up in Edinburgh and Yorkshire, which has given her an accent that tends to confuse people. Cat has written non-fiction books about exciting things like cowboys, sharks and pirates, and now writes Young Adult and middle-grade novels.
