Margie Lachman

A New Vision for Midlife

A science based study that shows why midlife is a pivotal opportunity for a happy older age.
Research by lifespan psychologist Margie Lachman has upended myths and misconceptions abouts midlife. Her career includes co-principal investigation of the groundbreaking MIDUS study, the largest ongoing national longitudinal study on midlife, begun in 1995.

Essential to Lachman's research is that midlife is when certain key gains and losses emotional, cognitive, biological, physical, developmental, professional, among others become apparent and recognizable. Their appearance can feel unfamiliar and jarring (and may lead to the mistaken assumption that midlife is inevitably a period of disarray and crisis). To the contrary, midlife is a pivotal opportunity to seize control of these gains and losses, to reconcile and balance them out. With the right openness and flexibility of mind, midlife can be rewarding, productive, and joyous. And, importantly, it sets the stage for happy older age.

"The middle, far from a lost horizon, provides a unique vantage point that only the middle affords," Lachman writes in Primetime, her first book of trade nonfiction. "Reflecting on our past at the same time as we look toward the future, midlife presents an opportunity for assessing what truly matters. And, having lived a good while, our experience in life can give us the confidence to pivot, be it a little or a lot."

Readers will learn to make the pivot(s) appropriate to their circumstances with tools like the "selection, optimization, compensation model," "primary control" vs. "secondary control," and "generativity." Reader questionnaires will be included as well for additional guidance and support.

Margie Lachman is Minnie and Harold Fierman Professor of Psychology at Brandeis University and director of the Lifespan Lab and the Boston Roybal Center for Active Lifestyle Interventions. She has been called upon as an expert on midlife by major television, radio, and print media, including CBS's Morning News, Evening News, and Sunday Morning, as well as the Today show on NBC. Her work on midlife has been cited in The New York Times, The Boston Globe, Psychology Today, and The Atlantic, among others.
