POWER SHIFT

Claire Shipman Katty Kay

From bestselling authors of The Confidence Code and The Confidence Code for Girls - translated in 22 languages - comes a new exploration of the massive societal power shift currently underway and how we all navigate power when our identities, our professional and personal roles, and our expectations are all shifting.
Although most of us can't see the grand design from the trenches of our everyday lives, men are losing influence and women are gaining it. But this shift in power is not always obvious and it's rarely voluntary - it's also responsible for much of our current climate of unease. As is the case with all power shifts, the old model has deep roots and is proving remarkably resistant to change. Moreover, there is no playbook for a healthy female/male leadership model, so how do we get there?

POWER SHIFT will be our road map as it reimagines the paths to leadership in broader ways that acknowledge female strength - a new model of leadership that works for women and girls, as well as men and boys. It's a leadership dynamic that needs to embrace the uncomfortable instead of avoiding it. This particular period of overwrought emotions will pass, as the power shift solidifies, but it bears remembering that discomfort is both the result of transformation, and the fuel for more of it.

Authors Kay and Shipman ground their work in history and sociology, asking provocative questions that are often too uncomfortable to raise:
Will men ever give up power willingly?
Can men learn to work with and love powerful women?
Do women even want power? Will they actually wield it differently?

POWER SHIFT is a brutally honest social expose and map of the path forward, drawing on chronicles from the frontlines of the power shift. How we navigate this turbulent time, how we persuade men to cede power gracefully and women to take it up willingly will determine how we run our offices, our politics, our schools and even our marriages, for generations to come.
