THE POSSIBLE WORLD

Liese O'Halloran Schwarz

THE POSSIBLE WORLD is a richly compelling novel that traces the converging lives of a young boy who witnesses a brutal murder, the doctor who tends to him, and an older woman guarding her long buried secrets-- from an ER doctor turned fiction writer.
Ben is a shy, precocious six-year-old whose mom sings funny songs and has blonde hair and smells like hand cream, but after he witnesses a brutal murder, everything from before comes rushing back. Doctors think he is just traumatized by what he saw, but Ben is determined to find the one person who can help him.

Clare, one of the oldest women in Rhode Island, thought she had laid all the ghosts and secrets of her painful past to rest, but when a new resident at the retirement home begins asking questions about her past, Clare decides it's time to tell her story.

Lucy, an overworked and undernourished ER resident, tends to Ben at the hospital. But between all-nighters at the hospital and trying to pick up the pieces of her failing marriage, she doesn't have much time to help him.

Through his treatment Ben begins to uncover pieces of his past life, half-memories at first, then it all comes rushing back: Mama, Clyde, Brother Timothy, a cottage and the one woman who loved and care for him at Roscommon. As these characters delve into their personal histories, their lives intersect in surprising and touching ways. A richly layered story that spans decades,

THE POSSIBLE WORLD is an exploration of the special relationships between mothers and sons, the complicated ways our pasts shape our identities, the loneliness born out of loss, and how the healing act of retelling can become the foundation for timeless connection.

Liese O'Halloran Schwarz, a former emergency-room doctor, published her first novel, a Southern mystery entitled Near Canaan, while in medical school. She lives in Chapel Hill, NC.

In hauntingly beautiful prose, Schwarz weaves a complicated story that spans nearly a century, from the Great Depression until the present day. Brimming with emotionally difficult moments and an enviable understanding of human nature, the novel will seize readers from the first scene and hold tight until its satisfying conclusion. A bittersweet story full of imagination and nostalgia, loss and redemption.
