PILLOW TALK
What's Wrong With My Sewing?
The star of Bravo's Southern Charm and CMO of Sewing Down South explains the origins of his passion for sewing, how he turned a hobby into something real, and the tremendous gifts, as well as destructive temptations, Southern Charm has given him.
PILLOW TALK is the story of how Craig turned a hobby into something real. It will trace the origins of his passion, starting as a young boy in home economics class sitting down to a sewing machine for the first time. It will address the troubles he encountered as a teenager who was cruelly bullied, and who developed severe anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorders because of this. The book will track his origins on Southern Charm and the tremendous gifts, as well as the destructive temptations, it has given him. It will follow the years he spent flailing for some meaning and direction in life, even as he seemed to be reveling in all the trappings of celebrity. Readers will get a behind-the-scenes look into the very real drama that swirled about him, some of which was only hinted at on the show. But despite how well Southern Charm documents Craig's life, it fails to give a good reason for why he started Sewing Down South. And the why is darker and more ominous than anything the cameras showed.
While Pillow Talk isn't a gossipy tell-all, Craig has every intention of letting readers behind the curtain of his own drama and inner turmoil. Part of him wishes that Sewing Down South was borne, like Apple or Amazon, from a fit of entrepreneurial inspiration, but that isn't the truth. The truth is much more pedestrian: He broke up with his girlfriend and entered a tail-spin of heartache and self-loathing. Fans of the show saw how sewing - or, more accurately, his inability to stick with a career - came between his then-girlfriend and him, leading to epic arguments in front of the cameras. Were these fights staged for the show? Absolutely not. Was there more going on than what the cameras captured? Absolutely. And while he is grateful to the producers of Southern Charm for leaving a lot of that personal drama on the cutting-room floor, no account of how he started Sewing Down South can be complete without exposing what has until now remained hidden from viewers: an addiction to Adderall.
Conover is one of the stars of Bravo's Southern Charm and the co-founder and CMO of Sewing Down South. He is a graduate of the College of Charleston and the Charleston School of Law, and he currently resides in Charleston.
