OUTSPOKEN

Deborah Coughlin

50 Speeches by Incredible Women

This is one of the first ever published collections of speeches by women, presented by feminist writer and Women's Hour contributing editor, Deborah Coughlin.
A lot of history is made up of speeches. Speeches about big ideas, celebratory speeches, rousing speeches to inspire soldiers to fight to the death, comic speeches to help us see the funny side to life. From Jesus to Winston Churchill to Martin Luther King Jr, we've been raised with the words of important men ringing in our ears...

But where are all the women? Unless you're the type of person who loves researching suffrage speeches, you are unlikely to know many soundbites from women throughout history. Outspoken: 50 Speeches by Incredible Women is going to change that. From Joan of Arc and Virginia Wolf, to Michelle Obama and Ariana Grande, this is a celebration of outstanding and outspoken women everywhere. With an introduction to each speech by by feminist writer and Women's Hour contributing editor, Deborah Coughlin, Outspoken celebrates women who took the risk of speaking to audiences they knew wouldn't like them, who were ridiculed and ignored, yet refused to be silenced.

In this wonderful collage of women's ideas, one of the first of its kind, the female voice is right at the centre, with speeches collected into key topics including the body, freedom, politics and love. It's the perfect gift, a thank you to women everywhere who continue to speak out.

Deborah is a writer, artistic director, broadcaster and contributing producer on Woman's Hour, where she leads special multi-media projects, including Womans Lab and Take Back ConTroll, and also presents arts documentaries across Radio 4. She is the founder of award winning, feminist choir Gaggle which was included in NME's Most Innovative Ever list, and contributes to platforms like the Guardian, Stylist, Elle and more. Deborah was commissioned to create Yap Yap Yap- a live show celebrating women's rhetoric - a show she had been researching since her Masters in 2008. It has since been performed with high profile women at the Royal Festival Hall and toured to Wales.
