Lara Goitien, M.D. is physician specializing in pulmonary and critical care medicine, who has practiced in ICUs for eleven years, including at the Massachusetts General Hospital (Boston, MA), Intermountain Healthcare (St. George, Utah), University of Washington Medical Center and Harborview Medical Center (Seattle, WA), Presbyterian Hospital (Albuquerque, NM), and most recently at Christus St. Vincent Regional Health System (Santa Fe, New Mexico). In this capacity she has cared for thousands of patients and supported their families through their ICU stays.
She graduated from Harvard Medical School, did her residency training in internal medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and a fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine at University of Washington in Seattle. She received a National Research Service Award from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) to research physician burnout during her fellowship.
During the last five years, Lara designed and implemented a novel hospital quality program; the success of this program has garnered national attention. An article she wrote about this program was published recently in Health Affairs (at an impact factor of 5.7 this is the leading healthcare policy journal in the world), and the initiative was selected as one of thirty presented at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement IHI/NPSF Patient Safety Congress at the Boston Hynes Convention Center. She is one of ten members of JAMA Internal Medicine's editorial board, and serves as a frequent reviewer and guest editor for that journal. She has been published frequently in leading medical journals (including JAMA Internal Medicine, impact factor 20.8 and > 10 million downloads per year) and the lay press (including an article titled Training Young Doctors: The Current Crisis in the New York Review of Books, 2015).
