Roberto Casati

Una naviagzione filosofica

A profound and enlightening reflection on our relationship with the oceans and the sea. Philosopher of cognitive sciences Roberto Casati develops a truly "new philosophy of the sea", exploring the role of the sea in our lives, how we depend on it as a primordial resource of air and food and how it has made us who we are today.
Sea and philosophy are closely linked. Philosophy as it has been consolidated and handed down is born from the sea, from the constant confrontation with something we do not understand. A challenge for knowledge and for the concepts we use to describe knowledge. Author of The Discovery of Shadow, Casati had previously examined the experience and the relationship with the cold in La lezione del freddo (2018 ITAS Narrative Prize), describing the daily life of a philosopher and his family living in New Hampshire during the winter. Opening the path to a new point of view on oceans and the sea, Casati allows us to observe them from a perspective we may not have thought of yet, guiding the reader through a philosophical journey aimed at rediscovering the ancient and mysterious bond that, as humans, ties us to the sea Roberto Casati is currently a CNRS research manager at the Institut Nicod in Paris. He has taught at various European and American universities, and regularly contributes to the Sunday supplement of Italian newspaper "Il Sole 24 Ore". Among his publications with Laterza: Semplicità insormontabili (2006, with Achille Varzi), La scoperta dell'ombra (2008) For MIT Press, he is currently publishing The Visual World of Shadows with neurophysiologist Patrick Cavanagh, a synthesis of twenty years of research on the rules the visual system uses to construct objects. In the winter of 2016, Casati crossed the Atlantic on a sailboat inaugurating a research project, Cognition in the Wind, on low tech navigation.
