“Our binary conception of gender and sexuality is constrained, reductive, out of date. The hodgepodge of categories put together by our ancestors that is still being recycled by our contemporaries no longer fit the reality human diversity.” These were the words written by the author 20 years ago in his original book In Praise of Sexual Diversity (Éloge de la diversité sexuelle, VLB éditeur, 1999), which has become a classic in French Canada. He has now extensively reviewed and enriched a book which is both a manifesto and a useful handbook to navigate the new realities of the LGBTQ+ era. As sexual and gender identity expression and politics seem more vital than ever–in both aspects of the word–, this reappraisal is more than welcome.
