NOTHING GAINED

Phillip Y. Kim

NOTHING GAINED is a pacey financial thriller, the first to shine a light on Asia’s one percent, and an all engrossing look at the decadent lives of those who risk it all. But the scope of the book extends beyond simply Asia. The story travels to Italy, the south of France and with flashbacks to the excesses of Sin City and the iconic Central Park in New York, this is a truly Jacket forthcoming international tale of material excess and its inevitable fallout.
Cheryl Donahue, wife to one of the city’s most influential investment bankers is left reeling when her husband is discovered drowned late one night. In the wake of Jason’s death, she is faced with unpalatable truths as his ‘business associates’ circle in on his surviving family, and expose a side of him she never knew. As his shady dealings come to light, not least a $125 million dollar investment in a casino project, Cheryl is forced to fend for the reputation and livelihood of her family, and even their safety as these associates stop at nothing to secure their nvestment in ‘the Macau project’. With the help of Jason’s former colleague, Todd, Cheryl descends into a financial pit of dirty dealings in an attempt to salvage her family’s future. Set against the backdrop of the 2008 financial crisis, there is a side story that resembles the Bernie Madoff ponzi scandal in which an ambitious hedge fund manager, with the help of Jason’s reputation, swindles millions of investors. When Cheryl and Todd see the solution to their problem, what begins as a financial thriller evolves into a Ludlum-esque spy caper as the pair travel across the globe to track down the one person who has all the answers.

Phillip Y. Kim has been a banker for the past 25 years having worked for such companies as Lehman Brothers and Morgan Stanley. He draws on much of his wide-ranging experiences in the finance industry to fuel his writing. He now divides his time between banking and writing.
