In present-day Los Angeles, Claire Fontaine makes her living teaching French to a varied, and sometimes sinister, group of clients, all of whom “seem somehow in need of rescue.”

Claire has never quite gotten over the somewhat mysterious death of her daughter, Melody—or the suspicion that her ex-husband, Simon, was responsible for her death. Now, Simon is marrying again, another woman with a young daughter, and Claire feels compelled to save that child from a fate like Melody's.

At the same time, Claire finds herself threatened, and she's not sure who her nemesis is—the Iranian client who has become increasingly obsessed with her; the gallery owner who seems to offer love, but may not be what he appears to be; or the manipulative Simon, who may be no stranger to murder.
