NOPE!

Drew Sheneman

This is a sparking debut, sweetly (and humorously!) told, about a nurturing mama bird, a fearful baby bird, and his near-failure to launch by nationally-syndicated cartoonist Drew Sheneman.
The time has come for a baby bird to take flight. What could be waiting for him out in the world? A snarling wild cat? Vicious wolves? Hungry crocodiles?! "Nope!" he proclaims. Leaving the nest is not an option. But Mama Bird's kisses and cuddles--coupled with a swift but encouraging kick out of the nest--help the tiny bird soar.

Drew Sheneman is a nationally-syndicated cartoonist. He earned his BFA in Illustration from Central Michigan University and has received a number of awards including The Association of American Editorial Cartoonists John Locher Award, The Charles Schulz Award, and two Deadline Club Awards. In addition to his editorial cartooning Drew's clients include Hasbro and Dungeons and Dragons. He lives in New Jersey with his wife and daughter. Nope is his first book for children.

Thanks to the weirdest election season in recent memory, and Bridgegate in his home state, Sheneman may be one of the luckiest satirist in the business. I sat down with Sheneman, who lives in Bedminster with his wife and daughter, to discuss the his career, the art form of political cartooning, his influences, producing art on deadline, and his forthcoming children's book, "Nope" (Viking, January 2017). Below is an edited transcript of our conversation... Read more...

Sheneman makesa solid children’s book debutwith thismemorable parent-child pair—the baby bird’s sense of drama may remind some readers ofMo Willems’s beguilingly histrionic Pigeon—and his crisp digital illustrations and playful sense of compositionnever miss a comic beat.

This could serve as a broad hint to graduates at least as effectively as it provides reassurance for young children about to start daycare or preschool.
