NIGHT AT THE FIESTAS
Kirstin Valdez Quade shot onto the literary scene when her exquisite story "The Five Wounds" appeared in The New Yorker in July 2009. The author was a Jones Fellow and a Wallace Stegner Fellow at Stanford University. Originally from New Mexico, she has lived throughout the Southwest. Her father was a geologist, and the family, which includes a brother and sister, moved a lot to be with him working, which even included living for six months in a tent. In addition to The New Yorker, her short stories have been published in Northwest Review, The Best of the West 2010, Narrative and the Colorado Review. The Narrative story, titled "Nemecia" won first place in the magazine's Spring 2012 story contest and was recently chosen by Elizabeth Strout for the upcoming BEST AMERICAN SHORT STORIES volume.
