NEVER STOP

Dan Hurley Ian O'Connor

Life, Leadership, and What it Takes to Be Great

Dan Hurley is one of the most famous head coaches in America today - in any sport. He returned the UConn Huskies men's basketball team to their rightful place among the nation's elite, winning back-to-back NCAA Championships, and he did it with uncommon passion. His on-court eruptions, his face-offs with refs and even fans, are legendary.
But behind all the winning and swagger is a story of intense, harrowing struggle. Son of a revered high school coach, younger brother of a college basketball icon, Hurley spent years fearing that he'd just never measure up. He suffered through several bouts of anxiety and deep depressions. As a young player he was ridiculed, as a young coach he came up short. Many people would have given up.

But through relentless will, and Jersey City grit, he reached the summit, becoming such a shining success that the Los Angeles Lakers came calling.

For anyone needing a boost or a blast of inspiration, for anyone leading a team or wanting to up their game, for anyone chasing greatness, Hurley's story, told in his unique no-BS voice, is a must-read.

Dan Hurley is a men's college basketball coach who is the head coach of the UConn Huskies, two-time NCAA Division I national champions on his watch. He previously coached at Rhode Island, Wagner, and St Benedict's Prep and is from Jersey City, New Jersey.

Ian O'Connor is the author of seven books, including five consecutive New York Times bestsellers, Out of the Darkness: The Mystery of Aaron Rodgers; Coach K: The Rise and Reign of Mike Krzyzewski; Belichick: The Making of the Greatest Football Coach of All Time; and Arnie & Jack: Palmer, Nicklaus, and Golf's Greatest Rivalry. O'Connor is a columnist for The Athletic and former columnist at ESPN.com, New York Post, USA TODAY, and Daily News (New York). His latest book is Never Stop.

Dan Hurley emerged from one of the finest leadership families our sport has known, so it is no surprise that he set a standard at UConn that few coaches have ever matched. Like his father at St. Anthony and his brother at Duke, Dan earned his way with an unrelenting approach to the game. His players respond with championship effort because they know how much he genuinely cares about them.

Great coaches are driven to strive for perfection. Dan Hurley has the unique ability to create a culture where caring for his players enables them to rise above their natural talents to create a consistent winner. That is the genius of a true leader.

I doubt very much that I would have done in college basketball what Dan has done at UConn. I am absolutely in awe of what he has done. What the world has seen in his twelve NCAA Tournament games to win back-to-back national titles, I don't care who I've talked to in the basketball world, they all just say, 'How is it possible to have such utter dominance?'

Leadership comes in all shapes and sizes. Dan Hurley is raw, brutally honest, and unwaveringly intense. He's made his mark by being true to himself and unique in his approach to basketball and life. His story connects on so many levels and goes beyond the game that has made him a Hall of Famer.
