MON CORPS M'APPARTIENT

Amina Sboui

The story of Amina, who became famous when she posted a bare-breasted photo of herself bearing the inscription “My body belongs to me” on Facebook.
Amina, a young Tunisian of 19, made headlines worldwide last March 1st when she posted a photo of herself, breasts bare, on social networks, with the inscription « My body belongs to me”, thus demanding her freedom in a country where the rights of women are increasingly flouted by the Islamists. It was a gesture that nearly got her killed and led to sequestration by her family and the opprobrium of society—including proper Tunisian society considered progressive—and, ultimately, prison. She claimed her adherence to Femen. Scandal in Tunis. She left the Femen movement. Scandal in Paris, where she resides today. Going back to her childhood, she describes the milieu in which she grew up, where her feminist struggle first took root. The story of a young woman whose ordeal forces our respect and, through her, the story of all women who are compelled to fight to live according to their own values. A powerful and moving narrative but also, in her own words, one “full of black humor and without any whinging”. Having fled her country, today Amina Sboui, 19, lives in Paris. Mon corps m'appartient is her first book.
