A Non-Binary Life
Beginning with their birth and early childhood years of gender freedom, Ferguson recounts in ME, MYSELF, THEY the tumultuous evolution of their identity, including traumatizing experiences with gender conversion therapy, bullying, depression, sexual assault, and violent physical assault. But Ferguson's journey is above all about survival, evolution, and self-acceptance. Through their impassioned storytelling, we learn what it means to reclaim one's identity and to live beyond the binary. Ultimately, ME, MYSELF, THEY explains what it feels like to never truly fit into the prescribed roles of boy or girl, woman or man.
Gender identity is proving commercially successful in film and TV, with the success of programs including Pose (FX), Transparent (Amazon), the reality series I Am Jazz (TLC) and RuPaul's Drag Race (VH1), and Hannah Gadsby's international sensation Nanette (Netflix). Even clothing and makeup retailers are following, with brands such as Fluide and MAC now targeting genderfluid audiences.
Yet this increased visibility has been met with violent - and fatal - backlash. With the rise of alt-right and populist movements around the world, the last two years have proven to be among the deadliest in recorded history for transgender people. With lives at stake and hard-won LGBTQ rights in jeopardy, Joshua M. Ferguson's storytelling and activism is now more important than ever.
JOSHUA M. FERGUSON (Ph.D.) is a non-binary trans (they/them) filmmaker, writer, artist, and advocate, who made history in 2018 by receiving the first gender-neutral birth certificate in Ontario, Canada. Ferguson holds a Ph.D. from the University of British Columbia's Institute for Gender, Race, Sexuality and Social Justice. Their writing and advocacy efforts have been featured in international publications including HuffPost, VICE, BuzzFeed, Teen Vogue, OUT Magazine, NBC News, the Guardian, and the Toronto Star. Joshua is currently working on a feature-length documentary They Are Joshua (2019), a complement to Me, Myself, They, set to be released in 2019 and screened at LGBTQ film festivals across North America.
