LUCID DYING

Sam Parnia

The New Science Revolutionizing How We Understand Life and Death

From an internationally renowned expert in resuscitation and near-death experience, a groundbreaking look at what happens to us when we die, based on the largest-ever research study run on near-death experiences.
What happens to us when we die? For millennia, we've sought the answers, and we've hoped to find them in near death experiences. But while those answers have come haphazardly and can't be trusted, groundbreaking research is now formalizing our understanding of death in new and thrilling ways. At the frontlines of that research is Dr. Sam Parnia.
This will be the first book to formally explore and understand what happens to the human mind and consciousness our self - not only in the period leading up to death, but more importantly, during and after death. Lucid Dying will explore the cutting-edge science of what happens when we die and will reveal the transformative life lessons that emerge from the human experience of death. Using data derived from multiple scientific studies, Dr. Parnia shows that the entity we refer to as consciousness or the self - does not seem to become annihilated when we die. These studies are also showing that there is a universal experience of death that is meaningful, purposeful, transcendent, positive, and transformative.
Dr. Parnia provides firm evidence that the human experience of death is neither hallucinatory, delusional or illusory, and is in fact purposeful and meaningful and reveals a unique understanding of a new dimension after death. His studies confirm that during death, human consciousness follows a very specific overall narrative arc, in which individuals relive their lives not only from their own experiences, but from the perspective of all those with whom they've interacted. What follows is a purposeful and meaningful review of their own actions, thoughts, and intentions towards others. This hidden aspect of human consciousness is universal much like the psychological notion of a collective unconsciousness and the book shows how we can access this deeper wisdom to lead more purposeful lives.
The discoveries Dr. Parnia details in this book will lead to a monumental paradigm shift. Not only does his research hold the possibility of saving lives, but it offers a radical rethinking of human consciousness. Not since Raymond Moody's best-selling book Life After Life appeared fifty years ago and sold more than 3 million copies, has a book attempted to demonstrate the experience of death in such a monumental and comprehensive way. Lucid Dying will speak to readers of commercial and critical successes such as Michael Pollan's How to Change Your Mind, Eben Alexander's Proof of Heaven, Adrian Owens' Into the Gray Zone, Sherwin Nuland's How We
Die, and Paul Kalanithi's When Breath Becomes Air.
Sam Parnia is the Director of Critical Care & Resuscitation Research at the New York University School of Medicine, as well as the Co-chair of the cardiac arrest resuscitation clinical service at New York University Langone Health System. Currently, he directs multiple large studies of cardiac arrest across many hospitals in the United States and United Kingdom. He is the author of two books, The New York Times Bestseller, Erasing Death: The Science That is Rewriting the Boundaries Between Life and Death (Harper One) and What Happens When We Die (Hay House). He has regularly appeared on major media outlets on both sides of the Atlantic, including The Today Show, Dr. OZ, NBC, Fox News, Discovery, National Geographic, Popular Science, New Scientist, Time Magazine, The BBC, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The Guardian, The Telegraph, The Times (London), CBS, The Daily Mail, Daily Express, and Frontline, to name a few.
