LOVE, HENRI

Henri J. M. Nouwen

From the bestselling author of such spiritual classics as The Return of the Prodigal Son and The Wounded Healer comes this collection of over 100 unpublished letters that offer deep spiritual insight into the human experience and reveal in new ways the intimacy and deeply felt compassion at the heart of Henri Nouwen's relationship with God.

Over the course of his life, Henri wrote thousands of letters to friends, acquaintances, parishioners, students, and readers of his work all around the world. He corresponded in English, Dutch, German, French and Spanish, and took great care to store and archive the letters decade after decade.

Some of Henri's letters are typed. Henri held a deep conviction about the value of reaching out to others through letters, and dedicated hours to this conviction each day. He believed that a thoughtful letter written in love could truly change someone's life. Many people looked to Nouwen as a long distance spiritual advisor. He was in correspondence with up to 500 people at a time, encouraging many to make personal visits. In Soul Survivor, Philip Yancey writes of being "stabbed with conviction" at the attention Nouwen gave to each and every person he was with.

The book will consist of roughly 130 letters that stretch from the earliest years of Henri's career up through his last ten years at L'Arche Daybreak. Rich in spiritual insights as well as touching details of Henri's daily life, they will include letters to close friends, students, and readers of his books whom he never met in person as well as academic and ministry leaders. The letters will be organized around themes that emerge in both Henri's work and correspondence such as: Vocation and Calling; Solitude and Prayer; Suffering and Perseverance in Difficult Times; Belovedness; and Community. Across all of these letters, the idea that will emerge perhaps most clearly is Henri's belief in the rich value of human relationships in this world.
