LIMELIGHT

Amy Poeppel

In a smart and funny new novel by the author of the critically acclaimed, "big-hearted, charming" (The Washington Post) Small Admissions, a family's move to New York City brings surprises and humor as their lives merge with the captivating world of Broadway.
Allison Brinkleywife, mother, and former unflappable optimistdiscovers that a carefully weighed decision to pack up and move her family from suburban Dallas to the glittery chaos of Manhattan may have been more complicated than she and her husband initially thought.

Allison learns that New York is unruly and bewildering, defying the notions she developed from romantic movies and a memorable childhood visit. After a humiliating call from the principal's office and the loss of the job she was counting on, Allison begins to accept that New York may not suit her after all.

When Allison has a fender-bender, witnessed by a flock of mothers at her son's new school, she is led to the penthouse apartment of a luxurious Central Park West building and encounters a spoiled, hungover, unsupervised teenager who looks familiar. It doesn't take long to recognize him as Carter Reida famous pop star who has been cast in a new Broadway musical. Through this brush with stardom, Allison embraces a unique and unexpected opportunity that helps her find her way in the heart of Manhattan.

In a book that delivers laughs, warmth, and delightful wish fulfillment, Poeppel dives into celebrity culture and modern motherhood with her trademark "quick-witted and razor-sharp" (Taylor Jenkins Reid, author of Maybe in Another Life) style.

Amy Poeppel is the author of Small Admissions, which was first performed as a reading at the Actors Studio. Amy has worked as a stage actress and teacher and now lives with her husband and three sons in New York City and Frankfurt, Germany.

Ms. Poeppel clearly has a lot of experience with the Big Apple and breaks down the glitz and glamor to show the reality beneath the surface beautifully. I had high hopes for her second novel, and she didn't disappoint. Allison and her family were well-developed characters, particularly her teenage daughter, Charlotte. Both Allison and Charlotte surprised me throughout the book. I love it when characters surprise me!.. Let me assure you that I really enjoyed this book and recommend it to readers who enjoy reading about NYC, celebrity lifestyle, and family dynamics.

Limelight is a joy to read from start to finish. Poeppel's writing is smart and fresh, and as a supreme fan of all things Broadway related, I love the subject matter... Her inclusion of the various characters that contribute to the show such as the director, the producers, and the fellow actors starring with Carter, Kevin Kline and Melissa McCarthy, adds authenticity and depth to the story. I also love the song lyrics Poeppel uses at the beginning of each section; each choice is relevant to that portion of the book, and several provide a glimpse into the world in which Carter exists and induce empathy in the reader for Carter and his situation. I highly recommend Limelight; it comes out May 1st and will make a fabulous summer read.

A fun, charming, and surprisingly touching tale about the meaning of home and human connections in a world moving at an ever-accelerating pace into what often seems an ever-increasing superficiality. Limelight is like one of those Russian matryoshka dolls, a story within a story within a story. It's cleverly plotted and fast paced, populated with a variety of interesting characters. Laugh-aloud funny.

A family that moves from Dallas to NYC becomes entangled in the world of Broadway in this witty exploration of motherhood.

Such an enjoyable, amusing, delightful and entertaining novel!! I had such fun reading this and had difficulty putting the book down. I highly recommend this charming, delicious and witty novel for those readers who appreciate Women' s Fiction.

Outstanding...A tribute to Broadway, teen celebrity life, and a mother who has now seen it all, this work is tough love at its finest and a great read for those wanting a ride on the wild side.

Readers, prepare to be surprised by this unexpected and unique novel. Told from the perspective of a middle-age substitute teacher, Limelight explores the theme of family in all of its interesting and unconventional forms. The characters are breathtakingly open and honest. The author even manages to take a character who, on the surface, is spoiled and entitled and gives them some redeeming qualities. It's these qualities that allow readers to love and hate this character at the same time. It's interesting to see how the lives of so many different people from different walks of life can converge to achieve a solitary goal. Limelight stands on its own and is hard to compare to anything else out on the market.

Despite its red carpets, paparazzi and scandals, the novel will strike a chord with every reader.

Nobody writes like Amy Poeppel. I make one prediction after another, anticipating well-worn fictional formulas, but Poeppel doesn't do formulas, she creates surprises. At the end I find myself walking with my head up and a spring to my step. I will bet you a dollar, reader, that you need some of that too. I can't wait to see what this writer brings to her next novel; will she bring Allison back with a sequel, or will she start from scratch? Whatever it is, I have to read it. Limelight is sharp, funny, and wicked smart. You have to get this book and read it.

A fun peek into the world of teen idols and Manhattan life.

A hilarious melding of family drama and the world of Broadway.

A fun, fast read. All of the characters were well-written, well-developed and felt very intuitive
