LIFE SUCKS

The F*-- Feelings Guide To Help Kids Deal With The Way Life Is, Was, And Will Always Be Unfair

LIFE SUCKS is a unique book for kids – similar to F*CK FEELINGS, but without the adult language.
In their bestselling books F*CK FEELINGS and F*CK LOVE, Dr. Michael Bennett and his writing partner / daughter Sarah Bennett ushered in a new trend of frank, practical, and funny self-help for adults.

Never ones for convention, the Bennetts are writing a clean, but not watered down or softened, book for readers aged 12-20 called LIFE SUCKS. In his extensive work with young patients, Dr. Michael Bennett (here’s the part where I’m supposed to tell you he’s a successful, practicing, board-certified, Harvard educated psychiatrist) noticed that the best way to get through to them and help them with the specific problems that come up over adolescence and young adulthood is to speak to them frankly and set realistic goals to control what they can control and let go of what they can’t. And on top of that many adult readers wanted to give their kids F*ck Feelings, but without the F*ck. LIFE SUCKS will be written for kids (namely, middle schoolers through those on the cusp of adulthood), but instead of offering the same stern, scare tactic-filled lectures as some adults, will urge them to laugh at the absurdity of popular notions and assumptions while rejecting blame and responsibility for problems they can’t change.

We think this book will appeal to readers and show them they aren’t alone in dealing with fake friends, with parents who think they’re ‘hip,’ and even how high school isn’t everyone’s glory days. LIFE SUCKS will show its readers that we all deal with crap in our lives and how to laugh at some of the things we can’t control. The goal is to be so relatable that kids might actually find this real-life advice helpful. Who knows, maybe it will help them realize that it’s okay to talk to their parents and other advisors around them about big issues that might be uncomfortable to discuss.

Dr. Michael I. Bennett, educated at both Harvard College and Harvard Medical School, is a board-certified psychiatrist, Canadian, and Red Sox fan. While he’s worked in every aspect of his field, from hospital administration to managed care, his major interest is his private practice that he’s been running for almost thirty years. He lives with his wife in Boston and New Hampshire.
Sarah Bennett has written for magazines, the Internet, television, and books. She also spent two years writing for a monthly sketch comedy show at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater in New York City. When not living by her philosophy of “will write for food,” Sarah walks her dog, watches Red Sox games, and avoids eye contact with other humans. Somehow, she lives in New Hampshire and works in New York.
