LES OFFRANDES
The Offerings
A profound noir novel that plunges readers into the deepest depths of Mexico City, a world of thugs and monsters, while painting, at the same time, a portrait of the artists and wonders of its highest society.
DESCRIPTION
Maude was born to a father from Quebec's Gaspe Peninsula and a mother from Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula, both of whom died in a tragic snowmobile accident. When Maude turns 18, she says au revoir to Quebec and holà to a life in Mexico. After her studies in criminology, she becomes a private detective focusing on missing-pet cases all across Mexico. She used to be in love, once, before her partner went crazy. When her ex-mother-in-law invites her to a fancy restaurant, she assumes it's because her Tibetan spaniel has gone missing, but the truth turns out to be much darker: two housekeepers have been found dead in the courtyard of a luxury apartment building.
EXCERPT
The volcanic ash turned to grey sludge. The sun never shines into this ghetto, Maude thought. She went to meet Poncho for a drink at the Pulquería Gomez. There were five kids huddled by the door, sniffing the contents of a plastic bag. When they saw Maude with her blonde locks tumbling out from beneath her Padres cap, they hissed a few filthy remarks at her. The tallest of them, whose teeth were a daffodil shade of yellow, ambled over to her and pretended to sniff her behind. Apparently that was the most hilarious thing they'd ever seen.
AUTHOR
Louis Carmain is the author of Guano, which won the Prix littéraire des collégiens (L'Hexagone, 2013), and Bunyip (L'Hexagone, 2014).
