LEFTOVERS is Factory Girls meets The Vagina Monologues, built from five years of on-the-ground reporting and hundreds of interviews, and written with the unique zing of an American woman who spent her mid-20s living in Beijing as a journalist and TV reporter.
Lake interweaves a searing critique of the political and paternalistic ideals that have governed China with dating travails of four of China's most impressive, young, trailblazing single women to provide a stirring look into the disorientation of a country that has opened up, prospered, and modernized very quickly, but hasn't re-calibrated its culture. LEFTOVERS examines the story of China's rise and development under a radically new lens and offers the perilous warning: A country that fails to embrace the transformative value of women seeking out more fulfilling lives, careers, and partnerships risks not only being leftover, but being left behind.
Lake's research and platform for upholding the rights of Chinese leftover women has been cited in news outlets, including The Economist, The Los Angeles Times, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The BBC, The Associated Press, and Elle. She adapted her research into a play called The Leftover Monologues that had a run of sold out shows in Beijing and Shanghai in 2014-15 and won a personal email of congratulations from Sheryl Sandberg. Lake spoke about the play and her research at TEDx Suzhou Women.

She is a contributor to Vanity Fair Spain. Lake lived for stints in Paris, Buenos Aires, Florence, and spent five years working as a television journalist in Beijing. Altogether, she is fluent in five languages and has reported from four continents.
