LE PATRON
The Boss
A fiction that shamelessly exposes the shortcomings of the media, new and old alike.
DESCRIPTION
The boss feels like he's finally made it in life when he's appointed to head a thriving digital media company. As a 40-year-old married white man, he has all the ingredients to succeed in the 1980s. Unfortunately for him, his employees are all millennials. The boss just can't figure out who these people are and why they're making such a song and dance about having unisex bathrooms. He starts to wonder who's really running the newsroom and why Generation X-ers seem to have suddenly and inexplicably become the target of violent incidents.
EXCERPT
I was in the middle of editing a story when I felt the tremors. I wasn't the only one: several heads soon popped into view around the frame of my glass door.
What the fuck!? Vadim screeches.
Man, is this an earthquake? Sick! cheers Adil, pulling out his phone to document his emotions in a string of Instagram stories embellished with bunny ears and
moustaches.
Look! Over there, by the bridge! Violaine points.
Through the window, we could all see the plume of thick, black smoke that was billowing a whole area of the city into darkness.
I summon up some dusty reflexes from the depths of my being as a journalistic spasm yanks me out of the professional coma and lethargy in which I had been comfortably wallowing until now. I spring up from my desk and, with a roar, I urge everyone in the room to snap into action and hurry out to cover what seemingly bears every resemblance to a terrorist attack.
Come on, get a move on! We always get the scoop on stories like 'Sexually frustrated dolphin wreaks terror on French tourists', but now's our chance to prove to the naysayers that Astronef also has what it takes to report on events that really impact on people's lives! Go, go, go!
Against all odds, my battle cry appears to have rallied the troops, since Balthazar, Vadim, Gabrielle and Esther are already dashing off in the direction of the disaster.
It's a first.
I've done what a boss should do.
At last, I'm the boss.
