LE DERNIER DES SNOREAUX
Last of the Sneak-Abous
A reflection on language, identity and madness.
DESCRIPTION
Ibrahim Abou-Snobara, alias Sneak-Abou, is a crazy old man. He can't help but think about his five sisters, Writer, Musician, President, Doctor and Madonna. Whatever will become of them when he's not around anymore? When there's no more I or Me? He casts a critical eye on each of them that might be misconstrued as cruel if Sneak-Abou wasn't Sneak-Abou, and if this account of his final days were not imbued with the profoundly human and light-hearted prose of Abla Farhoud. All the characters, themes and fluidity of a great family saga are here in this novel reminiscent of the author's earlier work Le Fou d'Omar (VLB, 2005; Typo, 2018).
EXCERPT
I knew I was her muse. Not me personally, but the crazy inside me. Only the crazy side of me is worthy of a novel. The other me, the more grounded side of me, is of no interest to her. Both sides are intimately interwoven, however, my dear sister; hurt one and you shall not spare the other!
AUTHOR
Born in Lebanon, Abla Farhoud was an actress and a playwright before turning her hand to writing
fiction. Her work has been widely performed, translated and acclaimed. Among her novels are Le Bonheur a la queue glissante (1999), Le Fou d'Omar (2005) and Le Sourire de la petite juive (2011).
