LATE SEPTEMBER
Following the tragic death of her little sister, bi-curious tomboy and misunderstood skateboarder Ines leaves behind her small town life for a fresh start in Montréal and we experience the electricity of the city for the first time and through her eyes. Then, in the midst of a bar fight, Ines meets Max, a handsome, magnetic skater whom she quickly falls for. Things start to take a strange and unfortunate turn.
As Ines tries to uphold the bliss of their intoxicating summer, she realizes that while she has escaped the confines of her small-town life, she cannot escape her past pain.Thinking a journey must be physical, Ines learns that love is not an innocent word and becoming a woman, who is capable of loving herself first, requires trial and error. Using vivid and heart-wrenching vignettes of life with her sister to disrupt the narrative, LATE SEPTEMBER reminds us that broken memory and the longing for love can be intertwined.
AMY MATTES holds an Anti-Oppressive Social Work degree from the University of Victoria. She occupies many positions within the field; however, being a writer of fiction and women's non-fiction is her most upfront and long-standing endeavour. Over the years Amy was a regular contributor to Exposé Skateboard Magazine and was featured in Skate Canada, Color, and SG (Snow Skate Surf Girl) Magazines. Amy was most recently published in the Globe & Mail, and in MUTHA, a Feminist site that examines Motherhood/Reproduction from every angle. Amy is currently working on another novel.
