Viola is in her forties. She has been swimming every day since she was a child. Dozens of laps back and forward, while outside, the world disappears. In her workshop, in Milan, Viola creates fragrances for a French Maison. In that shop, she receives people who, thanks to smells, seek and sometimes find a lost road. Her days repeat as if time were frozen: it has nothing to do with the advance of aging, it has to do with her life. The one that exists and the one that never existed. And while Viola tidies up her childhood home, something happens, among the smells of camphor and lavender. In a drawer there is a box, never seen before, there are letters, photographs and a tape recorded from when her mother lived in Paris, before she was born. Maybe inside that box is a secret. The secret of a lifetime. Francesco Carofiglio is a writer, architect, illustrator and director. In 2005 he published his first novel, With or Without You, for BUR-Rizzoli.
