JUST LIKE THE MOVIES

Kelly Fiore

Pretty and popular track star Marijke Monti is confident about almost everything – she’s got great friends, a great family, and she’s on her way to the State Track Championship. In fact, the only thing Marijke isn’t confident about is her relationship with Tommy Lawson. They’ve been technically together for almost a year, but Tommy’s never really been able to commit.
Lily Spencer has spent her entire high school career preparing for the future – she’s participated in every extracurricular activity and volunteer committee she could. As SGA Secretary, she’s required to stay on top of all the school’s happenings. But, at home, she watches her mother go on date after date with dud-dudes, still searching for “the one.” Lily realizes that she’s about to graduate and still hasn’t even had a boyfriend. The only thing she has had is a long standing crush on motocross team captain Joe Lombardi, who she is sure doesn’t know she exists. Lily feels stuck between being the person she’s always been and being the kind of person she’s always wanted to be. After another fight with Tommy, Marijke ends up at a late night showing of Titanic. As she sniffles along with the sinking ship, fellow solo movie-goer, Lily, sees Marijke two rows in front of her. While they live on each other’s periphery at school, Lily and Marijke never seemed to have much in common; but, over a post-movie coffee, the girls find themselves admitting their troubles to another person for the first time. “Why can’t things be like the movies?” Marijke complained. “In the movies, girls can be honest about how they feel – they can sky-write their love and the men never feel “tied down”? Why can’t the grand gesture convince a man that you’re the one for him?” Which gives Lily an idea – why can’t life be like a movie? Why can’t they set up their perfect romantic situations, just in time for their senior prom, using movie techniques? Marijke and Lily brainstorm lists of movies, then they compile a list of strategies – things each girl can do/use to attract, attain, and enrapture the boy(s) of their dreams. Once they’ve come up with the perfect plans, the girls commit themselves to being secret cohorts.

Fiore’s latest novel is sweet enough to make readers want to revisit Lloyd Dobler’s iconic romance in the seminal teen film, Say Anything, and plan their own grand gestures of love.
