When a Harvard history professor receives a thesis paper entitled Jesse James and the Secret Legend of Captain Coytus from Ulysses Hercules Baxter—an underwhelming student to say the least—he assumes the paper must be a prank; probably someone playing a practical joke on him. Professor Gladstone calls a meeting with the student, and is surprised to discover that Baxter is indeed the crafter of the paper, and Baxter believes every word of his story.
Baxter takes a very unwilling Professor back in time, via his thesis, attempting to prove his theories and pass his class. He takes him to 1864, where philanderer and crusader Captain Coytus is embarking on a mission to avenge his father’s death and infiltrate the Confederate Bushwacker posse, looking for the man responsible - Jesse Woodson James. Accompanied by the woman of his dreams, Coytus finds himself temporarily appointed sheriff of Booneville and he commissions his less-than-loyal deputy to help him carry out his plan. But tragedy strikes and the Captain is forced to change his immature ways and redefine his lofty mission—more or less.

Jesse James and the Secret Legend of Captain Coytus offers up a great mix of humor and history. The Captain, Frank and Jesse James, and a host of others come alive on the page and leave you smiling.

One of the ways you can distinguish between a good author and a great author is his or her ability to stir a reader’s emotions. Alex Mueck manages to stir all of the emotions from anger to laughter and all the rest in between. The author’s talent and sense of humor shines through.
