Sanditon is Jane Austen's last work and it remained unfinished at her death in1817. It was quite different from her other books, satiric and biting in a way her others weren't, and it's inspiring new interest. ITV/Masterpiece Theater is producing a new eight-part version of the book that will air in 2020. The screenplay is by Andrew Davies and his new ending has not yet been revealed.
Leading Jane Austen scholar Janet Todd has pulled the text of this edition from the original manuscript and made it cleaner and clearer. In her fascinating new introduction, Todd connects the work with Austen's life, notably her finances and her mother's hypochondria. She outlines the connection with Austen's other novels, especially Northanger Abbey, on which she worked at the same time. A comedy, Sanditon continues the strain of burlesque and caricature she wrote as a teenager and in private throughout her life. Todd's radical essay reviews Austen's life and work, exploring not only the story, but how it's been expanded and interpreted in spin-off versions by other novelists, film, and TV.
In explaining the early nineteenth-century culture of self: the exploitation of hypochondria, health fads, seaside resorts, the passion for salt-water cures, Todd contends that Sanditon's characters follow intuition and bodily signs, believing that desire can be translated into physical facts and speech can transform fantasy into reality. Todd shows Austen's themes to be as contemporary as ever: the mistakes of the self-deluded reveal the inevitable, ridiculous gap between how we think of ourselves and how we appear and sound to others.
This beautiful gift edition also has 30 full-color illustrations, including rare photos from the original manuscript. It will be a must-have for true Jane Austen fans and anyone interested in her life and works.
