J'AI CHOISI JANVIER: I Chose January

Nathalie Roy

A NOVEL THAT EXPLORES THE TENDERNESS OF THE STRONG BUT COMPLEX RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN A FATHER AND HIS DAUGHTER
DESCRIPTION

"I chose January." These are the three simple words Paul chooses to tell his daughter, Lili, he's decided on the beginning of the year to end it all. Paul is 70 years old, he's suffering from pulmonary fibrosis, and he wants to die with dignity. His choice to have a medically assisted death has stirred up a storm of emotions, but Lili and Paul are trying to make the most of the few months they have left to heal old wounds and make peace with the tragedy that tore their family apart. In spite of the sadness, it's better for Paul to say goodbye while he's still his sparkling self. And when the time comes to give the five injections, Lili will be there to hold her father's hand until the very last moment, no matter what.

EXCERPT

Those words kept running through Lili's mind. Paul, her rock, had asked his doctors about having a medically assisted death. She hoped they would say no. But if her father was right, he had the right to die with dignity. He could be gone in a matter of weeks, if he wanted to. But he was insisting on spending one last Christmas with her and her mother, Françoise.
Right now, Lili can't decide if that's a good thing or not. As thrilled as she is at the thought of spending as much time as she still can with the man who's been by her side all her life, she can't help but wonder if it will all be too much. How is she going to live for the next three months, knowing his death is looming ever closer?
