Maria, the dreamy, withdrawn young woman is a promising arts student. Her mother, a professor at the local university, has been recently diagnosed with cancer and seems to be declining. Equally consequential and important news is the discovery that Maria is pregnant. She resolves to bring her baby to term, but decides to give it up for adoption. The parents whom she selects to raise her daughter are a couple she has observed in the idyllic, historic vacation town of Beaufort, North Carolina, which Maria has visited many times. Maria’s life is changed when she and her ailing mother decide to take some time off in Beaufort. Not only is Maria unable to resist the pull of her baby, but she becomes enamored of the child’s adoptive father (who has no idea Maria is the biological mother). Passions and secrets engulf her. She is faced with a host of thorny, complicated decisions, forcing her quickly and dramatically to enter into true adulthood. Nic Brown is the author of the novel Doubles and the story collection Floodmarkers, which was selected as an Editor's Choice by The New York Times Book Review. His writing has appeared in The New York Times, the Harvard Review, Glimmer Train, and Epoch, among many other publications. A graduate of the Iowa Writers' Workshop and Columbia University, he has been the John and Renee Grisham Writer in Residence at the University of Mississippi and an assistant professor at the University of Northern Colorado. Currently he is an assistant professor of English at Clemson University.
