I'M THE ONE WHO GOT AWAY

Andrea Jarrell

With language that both soothes and cuts in its accuracy, Andrea depicts a mother-daughter relationship haunted by echoes and eventual reappearances of her alcoholic, abusive father.
As Andrea grows into an adult, she learns that she must put aside the protective instincts she learned in childhood in order to become an adult capable of expressing desire and experiencing safe, rewarding love. The memoir is presented as a series of essays, allowing us to know Andrea in various parts of her life as she admires and puzzles over her mother, navigates her own vulnerabilities, and learns what true security in a relationship whether romantic, familial, or friendly can be.

Andrea's writing has been featured in the celebrated New York Times' Modern Love column, as well as Harper's Bazaar and the Washington Post. This memoir, her debut work, has received enormous praise from Booklist, Kirkus, Publishers Weekly, Redbook, Library Journal, Town & Country, and LA Review of Books, among others. Since its release in September, Andrea's memoir has sold out its first two printings. Following an aggressive publicity campaign, she has also read in every major literary bookstore in the United States.

Andrea Jarrell's work has appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, and many other popular and literary publications. She earned her BA in literature at Scripps College and her MFA in creative writing and literature at Bennington College. A Los Angeles native, she currently lives in suburban Washington, D.C.
