“I want to take you by the hand and show you the wonders of the world...”

Franz Marc Maria Marc

The Letters of Franz and Maria Marc

Franz and Maria Marc’s letters, many of them previously unpublished, are a touching testimony to their love story.

From 1905 to Franz Marc’s early death in 1916, the artist couple wrote hundreds of letters full of longing and tenderness, the most beautiful of which have been selected for this collection. They provide intimate insights into their everyday life, the art scene and the warfare during that time.

“When you feel my hand in yours, feel that you have me, your Franz, who gives what he can give and wants to give, and gives it all — irrespective of good and evil, healthy and unhealthy.” Franz to Maria, December 1905

“I wish and long so fervently to bring joy and happiness into your life and I love you endlessly. How I look forward to working together! And if, by my faithful love and devotion, I can really give you an appetite and joy for work and thus for life, then I hope to be happier myself again. You should become a good painter — I have so much faith in and love for your art.” Maria to Franz, April 1906
