In this memoir Maggie describes the extraordinary circumstances under which she has been close to death seventeen times. Seventeen times. Seventeen separate and extraordinary experiences, of which any single one would mark a life forever. It is a profound piece of writing: one which explores the vulnerability of women in the world but, more importantly, explores fierce passion – for lovers, for travel, for writing, for children, for survival. It explores the very thin membrane between life and death and it explores the change that happens once you have pushed that boundary as far as you can.

The body is the organising principle, and I’ve sent you a little bound edition of ‘Neck’, the opening chapter, which should be with you in a day or so. Even that little taste (well, you have the whole manuscript here too) will hook you, I’m sure. It’s not long. It’s hard to anticipate what Piper will make of it at this point, with Maggie such a new addition to the list, but please encourage them to read it as quickly as possible – there are many strategies to discuss, they might even find that they prefer to publish this book first, or simultaneously.
