HUSKY

Justin Sayre

A beautifully crafted debut that captures an intimate story of change and acceptance, written in a unique, original voice.
Twelve-year-old Davis lives in an old brownstone with his mother and grandmother in Brooklyn. He loves people-watching in the park, visiting his mom in the bakery she owns, and listening to the biggest operas he can find as he walks everywhere. But Davis is having a difficult summer. As questions of sexuality begin to enter his mind, he worries people don’t see him as anything other than “husky.” To make matters worse, his best girlfriends are starting to hang out with mean girls and popular boys.

Davis is equally concerned about the distance forming between him and his single mother as she begins dating again, and about his changing relationship with his amusingly loud Irish grandmother, Nanny.

Ultimately, Davis learns to see himself outside of his one defining adjective. He’s a kid with unique interests, admirable qualities, and people who will love him no matter what changes life brings about. Justin Sayre beautifully handles the fear and anguish young people sometimes feel about change in their lives.

Justin Sayre is an accomplished stage and screen writer. He has staged successful shows off-Broadway in NYC for years, and Michael Patrick King (of Sex and the City fame) brought him out to Los Angeles to write for 2 Broke Girls. Justin has successfully maintained his NYC gigs while also showcasing his original work on stage in LA. Next year he will write for and appear on Lisa Kudrow's The Comeback.

[G]enuinely funny, heart-wrenching . . . Humorous and heartfelt.

As society continues to evolve, our literature must do its part in reflecting these changes in attitude, practice, and understanding. Husky does just that and is a superb addition to the middle grade literary canon.

[A] moving journey of self-discovery and a gratifying coming-of-age story.
