HOW TO BE TOGETHER

Jenny Hwang

The Counterintuitive Guide to Connecting with Your Teen by Caring for Yourself

In HOW TO BE TOGETHER, Dr. Hwang offers plainspoken and actionable advice for revolutionizing how parents understand disconnection with teens. Rather than an impasse to be eliminated, disconnection can be a doorway to fresh, unshakeable new bonds between parent and child. When parents respect their teen's pull for autonomy, trust their ability to learn through failure, and stop micromanaging and nagging, they can nurture a new relationship with who their teen is becoming.
A crucial and surprising space opens when parents can take this kind of leap. Often, child's adolescence awakens old wounds and unhealed emotions in us.

By working on ourselves in this new space, we won't withdraw emotionally from our children's liveswe discover new paths to bring our whole self into the relationship, becoming both a vital resource and trusted confidant for our teen. Dr. Hwang shows us the underlying behavioral psychology that supports this bold, empowering strategy, while sharing hard-won advice from the trenches on how to put these tactics into practice.
