HOW I RESCUED MY BRAIN
A Psychologist's Remarkable Recovery from Stroke and Trauma
David Roland is psychiatrist who found himself in accident and emergency a few years ago with barely any idea who he was let alone what had happened to him, fearing that he'd had a nervous breakdown and somehow become just like one of his many patients. Eventually they discovered the truth: David had suffered a stroke, which had resulted in brain injury. He faced two choices: give up or get his brain working again.
HOW I RESCUED MY BRAIN tells of David's emotional and cognitive recovery, describing conventional psychotherapy, mindfulness and meditation, along with other activities that enhance brain health such as ocean swimming and music.
In the tradition of Memoirs of an Addicted Brain by Marc Lewis, The Woman Who Changed Her Brain by Barbara Arrowsmith Young and My Stroke of Insight; a brain scientist's personal journey by Jill Bolte Taylor, this is an amazing tale of one man's resilience, and his determination to overcome one of the most frightening situations imaginable the fear that he had lost his mind, and might not get it back.
David Roland has a PhD in clinical psychology. Trained in neuropsychological assessment, he studied interpersonal neurobiology with professor Daniel Siegel (author of Mindsight). David is an honorary associate with the School of Medicine at the University of Sydney. He is a member of the Australian Psychological Society and a founder of the Australian branch of the Compassionate Mind Foundation. His first book is The Confident Performer (1998).
