HOPE IN A JAR

Deborah Marcero

In this companion to the acclaimed and bestselling picture books In a Jar and Out of a Jar, a little bunny and his friends collect their hopes and dreams for the future in jars.
Llewellyn the bunny and his friends dream of many things. Some of their dreams are small, like learning to ice skate, visiting a friend, or acting in the school play. And some of their dreams are big, like going to the moon, or becoming a ballet dancer or a wildlife photographer. Their dreams feel so precious that the bunnies place them in jars for safekeeping. But when a storm comes and destroys their collection of jars, Llewellyn and his friends wonder: what's the point of dreaming if everything could be lost?

This timely, powerful, and beautifully illustrated story of perseverance and resilience explores setbacks, loss, and grief, and shows howwith the help of friends and loved onesto find the strength to start again.

Marcero's spare, eloquent narrative is nicely extended through speech balloons and charming illustrations in sumptuous color, which artfully integrate the friends' activities and wishes. This third Llewellyn title stands on its own, highlighting how to find reassurance amid life's ups and downs and what imagination and friends can inspire.

A story with philosophical subject matter and a nuanced and subdued approach to it.

[A] sweet, affirming tale. [Marcero's] watercolor, pencil, ink, and digital illustrations are bathed in soothing blues, yellows, purples, and greens while using perspective to give the world, both big and small, a sense of profundity from any angle. A gentle look at the importance of always keeping hope alive.

I recommend Deborah Marcero's beautiful works In a Jar and Out of a Jar regularly so I was thrilled to see that our little bunny friend, Llewellyn, is back for a third installment. In Hope in a Jar, Llewellyn shares his hopes and dreams with those closest to him. He and his friends learn that dreams can be big, small, grow, change, and even be crushed. Among gorgeous illustrations, the little bunnies learn to keep hope alive.

What an adorable book! Three friends store up their wishes for the future in jars in this encouraging, optimistic book about friendship and the importance of trying again and rebuilding after sad things happen. The illustrations are particularly charming as well, with bright, saturated colors sure to appeal to young readers.
